RS-422/485 Application Note

What’s so hot about Send Data Control (SDC)?

As operating systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to control an RS-485 driver with standard software and the RTS line. This is especially true in Windows and multi-tasking operating systems.

With B&B’s Automatic Send Data Control circuit, driver control is in the converter hardware, so you don’t have to work with software at all. The circuit monitors data flow and enables the driver during transmission and automatically disables it when no data is being sent. There is no need to rework software or install new drivers.

Most B&B Electronics RS-232 to RS-485 converters and RS-485 serial cards include Automatic Send Data Control.

Isolated RS-485 Converter

Models 4WSD9OTB and 4WSD25OTB are top-of-the-line converters with both 2000 Volts isolation. Removable terminal blocks on the RS-422/485 side make installation easy. Dip switches are used for configuration. LEDs indicate data traffic. Modbus compatible. Power is provided through a 10-48 VDC input on the terminal block.

Model 485OI9TB is a basic isolated converter. The RS-232 side draws power from the RS-232 handshake lines of the connected PC. At least one handshake line must be asserted (high) to power the converter. If high handshake lines aren't available, model 4WSD9OTB is recommended. The RS-422/485 side is powered by an external power supply.

Models 485DRCI and 485LDRC9 are DIN Rail mount, wide temp versions of the 4WSD9OTB and 4WSD25OTB.
