RS-422/485 Application Note

What’s so hot about Send Data Control (SDC)?

As operating systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to control an RS-485 driver with standard software and the RTS line. This is especially true in Windows and multi-tasking operating systems.

With B&B’s Automatic Send Data Control circuit, driver control is in the converter hardware, so you don’t have to work with software at all. The circuit monitors data flow and enables the driver during transmission and automatically disables it when no data is being sent. There is no need to rework software or install new drivers.

Most B&B Electronics RS-232 to RS-485 converters and RS-485 serial cards include Automatic Send Data Control.

Isolated Converters protect equipment from damaging spikes and surges

3-D Product Tour

Models 485OT9L and 485OTLED are our top-of-the-line converters with both isolation and surge protection, enclosed terminal blocks for tamper resistance and dip switches for configuration. Isolated power and ground generated internally. No power is drawn from the host RS-232 port. LEDs indicate data traffic. Only RS-232 side requires a power supply.

Model 485OI9TB is a basic isolated converter. The RS-232 side draws power from the RS-232 handshake lines of the connected PC. At least one handshake line must be asserted (high) to power the converter. If high handshake lines aren't available, model 485OT9L is recommended. The RS-422/485 side is powered by an external power supply.

Model 485LDRC9 is a DIN Rail mount, wide temp version of the 485OT9L.

  • Optical isolation protects equipment from ground loops, surges and spikes
  • Support both 4-wire RS-422 and 2- and 4-wire RS-485
  • Baud Rate: Up to 115.2 kbps
  • Automatic Send Data Control
  • External 12 VDC @ 100 mA power supply required
  • Terminal Block RS-422/485 Connector
