Fiber Optic Application Diagram
Fiber optics -- the choice for minimum communications downtime

Fiber optic cable carries serial data reliably up to 4 km (2.5 miles), much further than conventional copper lines. Fiber optic data transmission uses light in glass fiber cable as a communication medium. It is ideal for spanning areas with severe interference, such as near heavy electrical equipment, welding or radio transmissions. Being nonelectric, fiber optic cable will not pick up any noise.

Power surges and spikes are created by electrical equipment, by nearby lightning strikes and from other sources. They are picked up by copper data lines and transmitted to the connected devices, garbling messages and damaging equipment. Fiber optic cables do not transmit power spikes or surges, providing the most reliable system possible.

Ground loops interfere with data communications through copper. Using fiber optics eliminates ground loops by not providing a conductive path for the ground.

Transmit RS-232 data at 115.2 kbps 4km (2.5 miles) with port-powered fiber optic converters

Models 232FLST and 9PFLST allow any two pieces of RS-232 equipment to communicate full or half duplex over two fibers at a distance up to 2.5 miles with no external power. RS-232 data signals at up to 115.2 kbps. RTS/CTS handshake lines are supported. The 232FLST and 9PFLST provide a transparent cable connection between devices with the EMI/RFI and transient immunity of optical fiber.

The modems are powered from the RS-232 data and handshake lines. A power jack is provided for connecting an optional +12 VDC supply, allowing use with low power ports. The RS-232 connector on the 232FLST is a DB25 female, while the 9PFLST has a DB9 female. The multimode fiber is connected via two ST connectors.

Features

  • Asynchronous RS-232 operation
  • Full or half-duplex
  • Supports TD, RD, RTS, and CTS
  • Data rates up to 115.2 kbps
  • Typical range up to 2.5 miles (4 km) on multimode glass fiber
  • EMI/RFI and transient immunity
  • ST connectors
  • Dimensions: 4.3 x 2.3 x 1.0in (10.9 x 5.8 x 2.4 cm)
